Men of Distinction

by M. F.

Men of Distinction is a program created by Mr. Braden, an outstanding teacher and mentor here at Stratford. Men of Distinction is a program for the young men in grades 9th – 12th. In order to participate you must be “seriously dedicated and committed to it,” says Maurice C. I had a chance to interview Mr. Braden and 4 of the young men involved in this program, and this is what they had to say.

I asked Mr. Braden, “What made you start Men of Distinction?” His response was, “It was a part of my purpose on why I am at Stratford and there is a great need for our young men to interact with positive role models and to help build self esteem and self image.” The next thing I asked was, “What were your intentions when you started M.O.D.?” His response was,”To provide an outlet for young men to express themselves, to grow, mentally, physically, and socially. And to expose them to opportunities they may other wise not experience. Our organization’s motto is ’brother building dreams, achieving excellence, and restoring the male image.’”

I also got to interview some of the wonderful young men involved in this program and here are some of the questions I asked.

1. What made you decide to join Men of Distinction?
2. Do you think it is a good program for young men your age?
3. Do you enjoy being in M.O.D?
4. What do you hope to get out of this program?
5. What would you tell young men who want to join Men of Distinction?
6. How long have you been in M.O.D?
7. What kind of activities do you all participate in?
8. Have you ever won the Tie to Greatness Thursday award?
9. Would you like to spread a program like this to other schools or do you just want keep it at Stratford?                                                                                                                                              10. Would you recommend someone to this program?

When I asked Michael R. what made him decide to join Men of Distinction he said,” I really don’t know, I guess to try new things.” He then said, ” I think it is a good program, but it should start in middle school.” I then asked him what he hoped to get out of this program and he said, ” To learn how to carry myself as a man and become more organized.” I then interviewed JeWayne R. and asked him the same questions. His response to the first question was, “Mr. Braden told me about Men of Distinction and it sounded like something I wanted to be involved in, so I joined.” I asked him if he thought it was a good program for young men his age and his response was, “Yes it really is, it keeps young men active after and during school.” When asked what he hoped to get out of this program he said,  “To better myself as a man and also in many other ways.”

The last two young men I interviewed were Ra’Drell W. and Maurice C. After talking to them I found out that both young men enjoy being in the program and hope to get more out of it. When I asked Ra’drell if he thought it was a good program for young men his age he said, ” Yes, because it helps us get out of that street/ hood state of mind and become a man.” He then told me that he wants a chance to go on in life and call himself a man. He has been in the program for 2 years and has never won the Tied to Greatness award. I asked him if he would like to spread the program to other schools and he said, “I want to help any other guy, because it just might give them the confidence  on achieving excellence.”

The last one was Maurice C. I asked him what made him decide to join MOD and he said, “I felt that I could join MOD to become a better man and have a little more to do activity wise.”  Maurice has been in Men of Distinction since day one and he has never won the Tie to Greatness award either. He said he looks foward to winning it one day. I then asked him if he wanted to spread a program like this to other schools and he said, “Honestly, I would like a little bit of both because it is a great program but it’s not for everybody.”

Respect

By: L. S.

Everyone expects respect
No matter who they are
The only way to gain it
Is to start treating everyone
As a friend, a brother, a sister
As part of a extended family
No matter what color or religion they are
Only then you will start to get
The respect you so dearly crave

Body Percings

BY: L. S.

“How many piercings do you have?” I hear this question more and more these days.

Many people talk about getting their nose, eyebrows, etc. pierced but I wonder if they know the side effects. The most serious risks are infections, allergic reactions, bleeding, and damage to nerves or teeth. If the jewelry is too small, it can actually cut off the blood supply to your skin tissue, causing swelling and pain.

For example, tongue piercings swell a lot at first but heal fairly quickly if the right type of jewelry is used. However, metal jewelry in the tongue piercing may damage gums and chip the enamel surface on your teeth.

So, fellow students, please get all the facts before you get your next piercing!

Real Talk!

By: L. S.

Take my words into consideration, “The Rich get Richer, And The Poor get Poorer!”

Now! Let’s think about that in terms of fashion!

For example: People who design COOGI, BABY PHAT, PHATFARM, ROCCA WEAR, etc. are making money off the poor to be richer! Working class men are steadily buying these expensive products as if they have the money!

The upper class doesn’t have to worry about buying name brands because they are the ones creating it! I’m not saying not to buy it; I’m saying people should make a budget and save money. Then, maybe one day they can be a part of the upper class and afford the clothes.

Solar Powered Cars

by W. J.

The first solar powered car ever made was made by Louis Palmer, a man who wanted to prove that the world could still use cars without burning oil and live an unpolluted life. With his solar powered car he set off to travel around the world and he returned on December 4, 2008. It took him 17 months to drive through 38 countries in it. The max speed of the car is 55 mph and it can go up to 185 miles on a full battery. Along his journey around the world, he gave 1,000 people a ride, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Palmer says that there is no reason for car companies not to more environment-conscious versions of cars, if they set there mind to it.

NFL 2008 Season

by T. C.

This year, there has been a complete shocker in the National Football League (NFL) . No one thought the Tennessee Titans would be leading the American Football Conference (AFC), just as though no one suspected the New England Patriots would have lost the last Super Bowl after going undefeated last regular season. The playoffs are approaching fast and it is coming down to the wire. Teams like the Baltimore Ravens, the Miami Dolphins, and the Denver Broncos are all fighting for a playoff spot. As the last four games of the season approaches, teams are realizing that if they lose their playoff, their chances will be very slim. The end is near and the motto “WIN or Go Home” is now in effect. The teams will be decided soon and the playoffs will start. The only question left to ask is “Who wins the Super Bowl”?

Tattoos

by C. O. and P. T.

Tattoos are very popular nowadays. Everybody wants to get tattoos. Different people get tattoos for different reasons, including just for fun. We decided to ask two people what makes them get tattoos; one is a student and the other is a teacher.  We got some really good answers from the people we asked.
Q: How many tattoos do you have?
B. H.: I have two tattoos.
C.W.: I have three tattoos.
Q: What does your tattoo mean to you?
B.H.: Although I only have two tattoos, they do not mean anything to me. I only got it so I could get over the fear of needles.
C.W.: My butterfly is for my mother. I also have Simba from the Lion King because I’m a Leo and my son’s name is self explanatory.
Q: Are you going to get any more tattoos? If so, how many?
B.H.: Yes, I want to get at least three or four more tattoos. I would like to get one on my back and one on my chest.
C.W.: No!! Unless I cover up Simba because I don’t like it anymore.

In Memorium: One of Our Own

by M. B.

In honor of one of our beloved teachers who had an unfortunate accident earlier this year and passed away, I have created an image poem using Wordle. The poem was created using quotes from various students and faculty members. We miss you Ms. Alley.
